Once you get past the bottom two strata on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs it becomes the little things that bring you joy. What do I mean by “the little things?”
How about:
- Getting an unexpected, happy e-mail from a friend.
- Finding out you got the early discount at lunch at your favorite Mexican restaurant even though you didn’t show up early.
- New shoes that fit well immediately.
- Sleeping well.
- Blue M&Ms, it doesn’t matter what type.
- Realizing the plant the woman at the garden shop told you wouldn’t survive inside in a pot is now blooming…two years after you bought it.
- Writing well.
- Retirement plan balances that actually go up two months in a row when you haven’t deposited any additional money in the plans.
- A comfortable chair in which to sit and good light to read by, oh, and a place to put your mug of tea while you sit and read.
The little joys.
So, if it’s possible, as they say, to nickel and dime yourself into the poorhouse, is it possible to little joy yourself happy?
